It’s tempting to launch a website the moment it looks finished. But “looks finished” and “actually ready” aren’t the same thing — a surprising number of small business sites go live missing something basic that quietly costs them customers or search visibility for months before anyone notices. (If you’re earlier in the process, here’s the full walkthrough of what happens before you get to this stage.)
Here’s the checklist worth running through before you flip the switch.
The essentials
- Every link works. Click through the entire site, on desktop and mobile, and make sure nothing leads to a dead page.
- Contact information is accurate everywhere. Phone number, email, and address should match exactly across every page — inconsistencies confuse both customers and search engines.
- Forms actually submit. Test every contact form yourself and confirm the message actually arrives where it’s supposed to.
- SSL is active. Your site should show the padlock icon, not a security warning — here’s what that actually protects.
- It works on a phone. Check it on an actual phone, not just by shrinking your browser window — they don’t always behave the same.
The things people forget
- A clear next step on every page. Every page should make it obvious what to do next — call, book, buy, or message.
- Search engines can actually find it. A basic setup step (submitting your site to Google) makes the difference between showing up in search results and being invisible for months.
- Analytics are turned on. Without this, you’ll have no idea how many people are visiting, or what they’re doing once they get there.
- A backup exists before you make it public. If anything goes wrong in the first hours after launch, you want a clean version to restore from.
The step that matters most, long-term
A checklist gets you a clean launch. It doesn’t answer the harder question: who’s checking on the site next month, and the month after that? Links break, security certificates expire, content goes stale — a site that isn’t actively maintained slowly drifts back into the same problems a good pre-launch checklist was meant to prevent.
Not something you should have to track yourself
This whole checklist — and the ongoing maintenance after it — is handled as a standard part of working with HopeRiver Domains. You don’t need to remember any of this. We do.
